27 June 2016 – On 26 June, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine and the United Nations agencies in Ukraine jointly with UN youth Advisory Panel, volunteers and youth associations organized the celebration of the National Youth Day with a strong focus on the Sustainable Development Goals in the heart of Kyiv capital city, on Khreshtyk street.

The Youth Day is held in Ukraine every year on the last Sunday of June with a series of events for young people. This year, it has been held under the campaign “Youth Will Change Ukraine” encouraging active participation of young people in the development of the country, educating patriotic consciousness of young Ukrainians and explaining the importance of the young people active participation in the implementation of Global Goals.

During the Youth Day festivities, more than 50 volunteers[IK1] , 10, 000 young people and active Ukrainian citizens enjoyed the variety of activities and locations dedicated to sustainable development, youth activism, human rights, diversity, employment choices, career development and healthy life style.

The participant and the other interested got acquainted with multiple youth projects implemented by the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office, UNICEF, UN Development Programme, International Organization of Migration, UN Population Fund, etc. from video, photo and information presentaton directly from the central stage.

The activities included the Quest on Sustainable Development Goals, graffiti contest “Peace in Ukraine”, skate and bicycle park, final of the CrossFit battle between cities, festival of cultures global cities.ua, HIV/AIDS testing, Lectorium “Ukraine is made by you”, Sport for All mini-city, music concert. More than 700 participants and 73 teams took part in Quest “Sustainable Development Goals” playing through 7 main location of the quest, solving riddles, getting new skills and knowledge about sustainable life, how to solve the planet from global warming and live sustainable life.

At the end of celebration activities Igor Zhdanov, Minister of Youth and Sports Jacek Tyshchko, UN Resident Coordinator a.i., UNAIDS Director in Ukraine and Ganna Starostenk, the Deputy Head of Kyiv City State Administration, joined youth at the sport contest and SDGs Quest locations.

The culmination of the Youth Day was the official awarding ceremony 10 SDG Quest winning teams received presents and certificates from the United Nations in Ukraine on participation in the “Global Goals Champions” nation-wide campaign.
