5 July 2016 - The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine with the support of the UN system in Ukraine launched national consultations on adaptation and localization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The purpose of consultations is to ensure common understanding of SDGs and their relevance to the context of national development of Ukraine.

Multilateral consultations united approximately 300 representatives of the Government, Ministries, the United Nations system in Ukraine, civil society organizations and academia. Further work shall involve holding 10 consultations at the local level, consultations with youth in universities of various regions of Ukraine and expert discussions in 17 working groups established for each of the Goals of Sustainable Development.

“While the SDGs are not legally binding, governments are expected to take ownership and establish national frameworks for the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. I would express appreciation to the Government of Ukraine and its institutions for the commitment and strong will in implementation of activities aimed to tailor the sustainable development goals to national Ukraine context applying a multi-stakeholder approach”, - said Jacek Tyszko, the acting UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine in his welcoming remarks.

"The goals of sustainable development should be the platform for elaborating national strategies of Ukraine in the next 15 years ", - informed Yulia Kovaliv, Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine at the opening of the first round of consultations.

The first four (4) rounds of multilateral consultations held on 5 and 6 July 2016 were dedicated to the 4 respective thematic areas, such as: Sustainable Economic Growth & Employment; Equitable Social Development; Effective, Accountable and Inclusive Governance & Justice for All; Environmental Sustainability & Resilience Building. Within the outlined topics, participants worked in the working groups that developed national targets according to the specific of the national context in Ukraine.

"It is of high importance to ensure that adaptation of Sustainable Development Goals and their further achievement by 2030 is performed with consideration of voices and needs of local communities, Ukrainian towns and villages to provide equitable social development", - said Vladislava Rutytska, Deputy Minister of Agrarian policy and Food of Ukraine on European integration.

The results will be captured in a National Baseline Report of the SDGs in Ukraine, which shall include recommendations given by the participants and experts on further achievement of SDGs in Ukraine as well as their integration into the national plans, strategies and programmes. The outcomes of the SDGs consultations on the national and local level will also inform the elaboration of the new Government of Ukraine – UN development cooperation framework covering the period 2018-2022.
